Superstores don’t harm small shops

Despite what some protesters feel, the result of the Competition Commission enquiry into the huge impact that the big four supermarket chains have over the retail sector has found that there is no evidence to support claims that they damage the trade of smaller stores.

This enquiry has been ongoing for nearly eighteen months and it would seem that the critics of the superstores believed that the result was going to be completely different. Even worse for the campaigners against the superstores was the impact on the high street where both Tesco and Sainsburys small convenience type stores were judged to have had no adverse effect on the competition.

The results from this enquiry have left the campaigners who include the Friends of the Earth with a serious problem of they can respond to the ever expanding supermarket chains.
